Timber gravel boards tend to be the ideal fencing solution for those looking to maintain a run-of-the-mill look in their garden. They also pair especially well with timber fence panels. That being said, however, it is important to note that timber is a lot more susceptible to rot than concrete and will therefore, need more maintenance and replacements where necessary.

Wooden gravel boards are a type of timber board that is typically used in garden fencing and landscaping projects. They are placed horizontally at the base of the fence, providing a barrier between the soil or other materials and the fence panel.

As gravel boards are your fence's first line of defence against ground contact and moisture damage, it's important to bear in mind that wooden gravel boards, like timber fence posts, are susceptible to degradation over time. To this end, they're often seen as disposable pieces of wood that can be replaced when needed.

One of the benefits of timber gravel boards over concrete gravel boards, however, is their flexibility; they can be easily fixed to both concrete and wooden posts. What's more, their traditional aesthetic ensures they complement any fence panel.

If you're on a tighter budget, wooden gravel boards are an economical alternative to concrete gravel boards.

Green Treated Timber

Green-treated timber, also known as pressure-treated timber, is a type of wood that has been chemically treated to increase its durability and resistance to decay, rot, and insect damage.

The treatment involves placing the wood in a large cylindrical tank, where it is subjected to a high-pressure vacuum and then injected with a solution of preservatives, usually containing copper and other chemicals.

The process of treating the wood in this way causes it to turn a greenish colour, which is why it is known as "green-treated timber". The green colour is not an indication of the wood's quality or suitability for use, but rather a result of the chemical treatment process.

Frequently Asked Wooden Gravel Boards Questions

Are Gravel Boards Essential?

At first glance, gravel boards may appear to be superfluous and an unnecessary expense for your garden fence - but in actuality, these additions will save you money due to their ability to enhance the overall longevity of your fence.

Not only will gravel boards give your fence and outdoor space a finished look and seal any gaps, but they also afford you the additional advantage of complete privacy.

They’re also great at preventing damage to your panels caused by:

  • Lawn mowers
  • Strimmers
  • Digging/fork/spadework
  • Impact damage from sports and ball games

At Materials Market, we recognise that no two customers have the same requirements for their fencing; accordingly, our inventory of timber and concrete gravel boards is tailored to your specific needs and carefully selected from only the most trusted suppliers.

We provide a wide range of heights and lengths so you can find the perfect product for your project.

How Long Does a Gravel Board Last?

The longevity of a gravel board largely depends on its manufacture. If it is constructed from untreated wood, you can expect to need a replacement within two or three years; however, if it was constructed from higher-grade pressure-treated wood, then your gravel board should retain its integrity for up to seven or eight years.

Concrete gravel boards, on the other hand, are a whole different story. As concrete is largely resistant to damp and moisture, as long as it sustained no damage, these types of gravel boards could theoretically last a lifetime.

Do Wooden Gravel Boards Require Maintenance?

Yes, wooden gravel boards require some level of maintenance to ensure their longevity. This includes regular cleaning, treating and staining the timber, and checking for any signs of rot or decay.

Are There Any Alternatives To Wooden Gravel Boards?

Certainly, there are other options when it comes to gravel boards such as concrete or plastic composite. These materials stand the test of time far better than wood and can cost more but you get what you pay for in terms of longevity and durability.
