18mm Melamine Faced Chipboard Applications

18mm melamine-faced chipboard, or MFC, is an excellent substitute for solid wood when working on interior projects.

Not only is it versatile, but it's also more budget-friendly than using natural wood. MFC makes for a cost-effective alternative to solid wood when constructing furniture pieces like shelving and cabinets.

We recommend using 18mm Melamine Board in the following applications:

  • Furniture
  • Cabinets and shelves
  • Decorative projects
  • Bedroom wardrobe and kitchen cabinet applications
  • Counter tops/worktops, doors, and desks

18mm Melamine White Chipboard Key Features

  • Consistent colouring and grain pattern - aesthetically appealing
  • Veneer patterns are natural - may present natural imperfections such as knots
  • Does not require any finishing
  • Moisture resistant - won't bend or warp when exposed to humid conditions
  • Abrasion, impact and scratch resistant

18mm Melamine Faced Chipboard Benefits

One of the main benefits of 18mm MFC is its durability; the melamine resin coating provides excellent resistance to scratches, stains and water damage, making it an ideal material for high-use areas and countertops where heavy utensils will be placed.

18mm MFC sheets are also relatively easy to clean and maintain and are often used in environments where hygiene is a key concern, such as hospitals and food preparation areas.

Another advantage of MFC boards is their versatility; they can be cut, drilled, routed and machined like wood, but they are also suitable for use with a wide range of adhesives and finishes. This makes them an ideal material for both bespoke and standardised designs.

What Is The Difference Between MDF and MFC?

Before you get to building that dresser for your bedroom or file cabinet for your office, take some time to familiarise yourself with the materials from which they are made.

MDF and MFC boards are often used in furniture construction, each offering its own set of pros and cons.

MDF - MDF stands for Medium-Density Fibreboard. Melamine-faced MDF is typically made of wood fibres, while MFC boards derive from thick structure panels, making them the more reliable and robust option.

MDF is more likely to swell and warp if it is repeatedly exposed to the elements, and screws can also cause MDF boards to split.

MFC - MFC is an acronym for Melamine Faced Chipboard. MFC boards are tough and can safeguard your furniture against weather damage. The melamine layer present in MFC offers increased waterproofing, scratch resistance, and a more polished look.

Some people prefer to use MFC over MDF because it does not release dangerous particles, like formaldehyde, which can be harmful if inhaled.
